Should I Become A Vegetarian?
If you are thinking of becoming a vegetarian you may be debating if it is for health reasons prosolution or because you do not like the thought of animals dying to be used as food. It is surprising how many people are willing to do this but cannot grasp just how important even one person who changes is in the overall picture. Ok, so one person won’t change things much but many individuals who think the same way can make a difference and even one person can help. Health is one issue which you cannot escape from as it is the consumption of meat that is the number one cause of heart disease in the United States.
It is the cholesterol in meat, eggs, milk, cheese and other dairy items that contribute to the problem of heart and circulatory conditions. Statistics for heart attacks clearly indicate a dramatic rise in the probability of a heart attack for someone who eats meat compared to a person who is a vegetarian; in fact they are four times as likely. The risk of a heart attack for vegans is even lower with only a one in ten chance of having a heart attack against those of a person who eats meat. The improvements in health do not end there if you are a vegetarian.
Normal, everyday food contains a whole host of preservatives (especially common in meat) that has shown links with many types of cancer. As a vegetarian you won’t be exposed to various hormones (that are packed into animal feed), which often disrupt normal hormonal processes in the body. A digestive problem, which many nutritional experts believe to be caused by intolerance to lactose, will also be avoided. The fact is people who become vegetarians have healthier lives; they can also feel comfortable knowing that they are not responsible for the slaughter of any animals.
Studies suggest that the average United States citizen will consume more than two thousand seven hundred animals throughout their life. By giving up meat, it is possible to protect the lives of possibly hundreds of animals in the space of a few years and many more if continued for a few decades. If you were also to give up dairy products and eggs, many battery hens and cows would not need to be used to feed you. So if you haven’t worked it out by now, yes we can all make a difference both individually and collectively which should show why becoming a vegetarian is so important. This commitment matters to each individual for their health, the health of the planet and those of the animals which will not need to be slaughtered to provide food.
